I just finished reading an article in the New York Times published in August of 2009 by Barbara Ireland.  ”Do-It-Yourself RV” was a companion piece to “Two for the Road” about her quick journey across the US in a makeshift conversion “RV-lite” Toyota minivan.  Although the article was interesting, it was the reader comments that truly drew me in.  I should mention that I have a fascination with comments.  I love reading them!  Sometimes they can be burly, funny, annoying, inspiring, aggravating, or just plain interesting.  And surprisingly the readers comments to this piece were the best part of the article.  Brief descriptions of honeymoons spent traversing the US and brief declarations of dreams of upcoming trips can be found throughout.  Little gems hidden amongst the comments that inspire travel by car.  I plan on reading “Two for the Road” and digging into those comments as well…fine reading indeed!

Our first visit to the Okefenokee swamp in Southern Georgia turned out to be one of my favorite trips of 2009.  Having lived in Georgia for over 14 years and

never visiting the swamp seemed like a real missed travel opportunity.  I had always wanted to go down to visit but felt quite intimidated by the thought of pitching a tent and sleeping on the ground right alongside alligators and poisonous snakes!  So once we took the dive and purchased the Argosy I knew that a trip to the swamp was on the top of the travel list. It’s been almost a year of ownership, 6 trips, and over 3,000 miles with our Argosy 28!  It has been a real joy to have the beast.  Along the way we have struggled with 2 flat tires, some leaky plumping, trying to figure out dumping, put in new carpet, leaky windows, and more.  Despite what may seem like setbacks we have both decided that we truly enjoy the RV lifestyle.  What may be the most difficult part of ownership is the time we are not in the Argosy.  I find myself imagining traveling the country from campsite to campsite enjoying the feeling of being free.  But because we are basically working stiffs, we have to plan our trips very carefully.

I plan on spending some more time updating this blog and posting about things that relate to my RV experience.  Check out this little story that inspired me recently in the New York Times.  Enjoy!

Ten more days until the Argosy comes home to Atlanta. In the meantime, there has been quite a few details that need to be worked out to finalize the transaction and prepare for ownership. Getting RV insurance on the beast has been surprisingly difficult. Not that getting the insurance is hard, but getting return calls from agents has been hard. We plan on having the insurance in place in the next few days and will be glad when that is done.

Sunday was devoted to just shopping around Target and Ikea making lists of some of the thing we will need to furnish the new home. We found some great dishes at Target designed by Orla Kiely. The selection of plastic dishes can be quite dismal, so we went ahead and bought a set that we love.

I hope the Argosy comes with manuals. The availability of information found online about the Argosy years is pretty anemic. Much of the information devotes energy to bemoaning the ownership of Airstream Inc. at the time by Beatrice foods. Then if you find any information it talks about the trailers and not the Motorhomes. I was also quite surprised to find out that many Airstream owners do not feel that Argosy models should be allowed membership to clubs or attend rallies! What a warm welcome. It was definitely a niche product and few were made.

Well, this seems to be the moment I daydreamed about! I came home from a horrible week at work to find a little brown envelope with my name on it resting on the kitchen counter top. After peeling it open, I found a picture inside of a Argosy 28 with photos of me and Russ and the dogs photoshopped on it with the caption “ours” underneath the photo. I cried in excitement and awe from such a thoughtful and meaningful gift. Russ is truly a remarkable person.

We are making plans to go to Charleston in two weeks to pick up the rig. The seller assures us everything works and it is road worthy. So far, we have no reason not to believe him. I have made reservations at Skidaway Island for two nights in order to get our selves on a crash course to understanding the new digs. We need to figure out insurance for the rig, which is not an easy task over the weekend. Hopefully, this will not be a total disaster!

After countless hours in stores today working on getting some essentials pulled together; I can easily say I am even more excited than before. All I need to do is get through two weeks of work and a final, then we are off on our first big adventure.

I guess it is not technically our just yet, but I am really enjoying pretending like it is. The Argosy is exactly what we were looking for, so I think this should be a great first time RV for us to go exploring!
